Galatians 6:9 (ESV)
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Adoniram Judson was a missionary in Burma who was falsely arrested as an enemy agent. He was placed in a tiny crowded cell and was forced to stand while the other inmates sat and slept. The air was mercilessly hot and the stench horrible. On one occasion, while being tortured, Judson was hung by his thumbs for hours.

Each night, his wife Anna would visit him through the tiny window of his cell and whisper, “Hang on, Adoniram, God will give you the victory.”

Week after week she visited nightly, but one night, she didn’t show up. Then another, and another, and soon weeks went by with no sign of his beloved Anna. His loneliness was unbearable! Had she given up hope and abandoned him?

No one told him his wife was dying.

Months went by, and then he was released – a broken man, barely able to walk. He limped to his house and found a little girl playing in the dirt and mud; at first he didn’t recognize his own daughter. She took him by the hand and led her daddy into the missionary tent where he found his Anna. She was now a bundle of bones and rags, barely alive. Her beautiful hair had fallen out and her blue eyes stared at nothing. She was nearly gone.

“Anna, oh Anna, my wife!” he cried softly.
“Adoniram, hang on; God will give us the victory.”

Her final words.

Judson lost his wife, but not his witness, because he came away from all that had held him down, found his due season, and went on to lead multitudes of Muslims to Isa (Jesus), building many houses of worship in Burma.

How will you find your due season?

When you learn to draw on His grace to relinquish your arguments and lie down – where before you’d stood in defeat and defiance – in restful, sheepish surrender.

Selah.

  1. Great story and a great God we serve whose grace is available to all who call on Him and serve Him.
